Hebel Block available from Mitre 10
Judy has been creating sculptures from found objects for some time and discovered the joys of carving aerated cement, known as Hebel blocks, relatively recently. It is a medium that is cheap, accessible and really easy to work with (although rather messy!). You can rapidly produce interesting pieces with relatively little effort (compared to marble!) This of course depends on the size of the block that you start with. It is also possible to paint the sculptures by sealing them first with an acrylic medium then painting. You can join blocks together with builders adhesive to create bigger works or stick other things on to them if you want
Materials:
Any woodworking tool can be used but don’t use quality tools as the cement wrecks them. Chisels, files, rasps and saws (particularly large toothed panel saws or even pruning saws) work well. Almost any metal tool such as screwdrivers or blunt knives can be used. Round files and rasps are useful for creating holes through blocks. Power drills and grinders with cutting discs make very quick work of large shaping tasks. Finishing is done with sandpaper starting with coarse (60 grit) through medium (80 grit) to fine (120-180 grit). Dust masks are a good idea and gloves if you want to protect your hands. Bring some books or magazines for inspiration. Hebel blocks in various sizes can be purchased quite cheaply from Mitre 10.
Tea and coffee supplied. Please bring your own lunch.
